Beavers snag another Californian

11:29 am in Recruiting by Jeff Contizano

Oregon State has consistently turned out NFL talent the past few years, which is a pretty amazing feat considering the Beavers never finish in the top 20 in recruiting rankings, and the fact that their home state does not produce significant D-1 talent. With that in mind, the Oregon State coaching staff has continually raided California for talent, and this year is no different.

Tight End Jack Tabb to Announce This Week

9:09 am in Recruiting by Tom VanHaaren

Tight end Jack Tabb is one of the more coveted tight end prospects still left on the board. After taking official visits to Michigan, North Carolina, Iowa, and Arkansas, Tabb is ready to make his final decision.

I’m going to announce either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. I’ll have North Carolina, Rutgers, Michigan, Arkansas, and Iowa hats on the table.

Tabb is a 6’4″, 230 lb tight end, ranked as the 32nd best at his position and a 3 star, according to Rivals.com.

Edit: Tabb has decided to wait until January to announce his decision. There is some coaching uncertainty with a few schools he’s considering, and potentially an offer from Miami that he’s waiting on.

2012 DB looking to turn heads

11:00 am in Recruiting by Jeff Contizano

Shane Smith is a  junior cornerback prospect out of Clayton, North Carolina. After transferring into West Johnston High School this past season, Smith had to adjust to a new school, as well as a football program with a brand new coaching staff. Their first season didn’t go as well as some hoped, as West Johnston finished 4-7 on the year, but Smith saw plenty of progress being made.

Butler is a Sun Devil

10:17 am in Recruiting by Jeff Contizano

Steward Butler, a 5″10, 170-pound running back from Lakeland Florida, may not be the biggest running back out there. But Butler sure can rack up the big numbers, as he recently finished his senior season with over 3,000 rushing yards.

Butler’s 3,043 yards ranked third all-time in state history, behind Travis Henry (4,087) and Maurice Wells (3,076). By the end of the year, Steward had rushed for over 12.0 yards a carry, and rushed for over 200 yards 7 times as he led his team to a 13-1 overall record and a loss in the state semi-finals to powerhouse Plant 48-6.

Over the recruiting process Butler had offers from West Virginia, Arizona State, and Marshall, and after an in-home visit from Head Coach Dennis Erickson and his son, running backs coach Bryce Erickson, Butler decided to pledge his services to the Sun Devils. Butler officially became the Sun Devils 11th known commitment in the 2011 class, and first running back commit.

At just 5″10, and 170-pounds, Butler displays very good open field speed and is a shifty player in open space. Is a very versatile player who can be used both in the backfield and in the slot as a receiver. His only weaknesses are obviously his size, and Butler has a tendency to dance and run east and west rather than cut upfield.

Arizona State currently employs a spread offense and I believe Butler will be a perfect fit for it. He may not possess the skill set to be a punishing, every down back, but he possesses very good speed and agility, and his receiving skills are solid enough that he can be used in a variety of ways.

It’s that time of the year where early enrollees are starting to make their decisions, and the recruiting process is starting to narrow down. Here’s a look at the recent verbal pledges for the Golden Bears. Read the rest of this entry →

New Florida Coaches look to make big impact

7:19 pm in NCAA by Jeff Contizano

This time of year is always a fun time for fans and coaches, as some coaches are fired and leave their programs for others. In the past two nights, we’ve seen two high-profile Florida programs hire new coaches.

On Saturday Florida announced they would be hiring Will Muschamp as their next head coach. Muschamp was the Defensive Coordinator for the Texas Longhorns and the Head Coach In-Waiting when Mack Brown retired. Today, the Miami Hurricanes named Al Golden their new head coach. Golden was previously the Head Coach at Temple, where he turned around an 0-11 program into one of the top programs in the Mid-American Conference. Read the rest of this entry →

Five Star Receiver is a Trojan

9:28 pm in Recruiting by Jeff Contizano

California is annually one of the top talent-producing states. You don’t have to look far past Los Angeles, San Diego, or other areas to find great talent. George Farmer, a 6″2, 200-pound receiver from Gardena, California, is one of the top players in the nation. Rated a five-star player by both rivals and scout.com, Farmer possesses a rare combination of size and athleticism. He’s able to go up and get the ball in traffic, as well as be a true burner in the vertical passing game, boasting a 10.6 100-meter dash on the track.
